Armenia is one of the ancient countries in the world. Mount Ararat, the God’s good will witness of the human race protection, has sheltered the ancestors of Armenian people at its foot from immemorial times. Mount Ararat has another name, Masis. When you draw the Mount and look at the shaped picture you understand the meaning of Armenian etymology of the word. Sis and Masis mean “maternal breast”. From here the word Sis moved with groups of people who moved and settled in the other parts of the world and reached new settlements, to the vocabulary of new people and peoples who have established countries as an eternal memory of the roots. Sis and Masis have also a traditional meaning, that is pure, holy, sacred, these meanings are close to “maternal breast” and are derived from these meanings. Today Armenia is an independent country with lots of historical monuments, talented young people who are strongly connected with compatriots living in different parts of the world, who are the participants and also winners of the most important cultural and sport competitions of international organizations. Armenia was the first country to adopt Christianity officially. Since 301 the Armenian Church has gathered around it Armenians worldwide by substituting the state with durable time.
Armenians are open-hearted and hospitable people. While addressing each other they often use а diminutive phrase ”djan”, which means soul, person and breath. The expression “Tsavt tanem” which means «I will take away your pain», in extended sense meaning «I will share your pain and sorrow». ) is used when asking someone for something or expressing one’s love.
There is no such expression in other languages and it entirely characterizes the Armenian who has always had a special attitude towards foreigners, who is sharing his last piece of bread with his neighbor. Armenians are grateful- hearted people, falsity is unlike for them. They are not vindictive, but people are ready to restore justice to the utterance. Armenians love their language, which is also called the language of prayer. Armenian is one of the oldest languages in the world, which belongs to the Indo-European language family.
Wherever they live, they create a piece of Armenia around them: Mount Ararat’s image, khachkar (cross-stone), Armenian carpet and of course, the Bible in Armenian. They are always looking for someone with Armenian eyes among strangers, rejoice when they find such one, they are proud when they see Armenian roots in famous people. In the country of stones Armenians mill the stone an Armenian tuff stone, which is fragile in use, but wind resistant. Often the Armenians’ character is associated with the same tuff stone that is having fragile heart, but resistant to difficulties.
